The Reign of Terror
By Blayne Bittner
The following is based on real eventsÖ

Jacque Montré was going to die today. He was sitting in the wagon among several other condemned souls. There was no talking involved today, for every single soul in this vehicle was going to be beheaded.

Some recent memories started coming to Montré-

The first memory was of him standing before the council. They were the Committee of Public Safety. Maxim Robespierre was present at this one-for a change. They were charging him on acts of treason to virtue.

Another memory came back to him.

He was sitting with his wife. It was September and they were having a fine dinner together. They were the bourgeoisie and actually were friends of King Louis XVI! This man was executed shortly before Montré. The food tonight was in mourning for the king's death. Within a matter of seconds from when they sat down, one of the committee members broke down the door. Him and his wife was dragged away-

Jacque looked up at the sky. A sparrow circled the air above him and landed in the birdhouse, which Jacque had created for it. He noticed this only because he recognized his home as he passed it. He glanced at his wife. She turned away; she was condemned as well! And yet another memory came back to him-

Jacque was standing in the public marketplace and he was speaking out to all of the people who he was among. He was contradicting Robespierre and his supposed virtue-

Jacque spent about thirty minutes recapping these memories. He looked up at the sky. He turned left.

And there goes another enlightened peasant!
